Interview with Zeke Newman – FIH Umpire at EuroHockey Espinho 2016

As the EuroHockey Indoor Championship II - Espinho 2016 is almost here, the organization of the event decided to interview some persons of interest that will be part of the event taking place between 15th to 17th January. This time, the Australian umpire, Zeke Newman, kindly answered a few questions about his expectations on the event, as well as his thoughts about the country hosting the event, Portugal.

What are your expectations for this event?
This event is a huge step in my umpiring career being appointed from Australia as an FIH Open Place Appointment with EHF. I think this tournament will be of a very high standard as teams look to build their indoor hockey towards gaining qualification into the top division and ultimately the next Indoor World Cup.
From a personal point of view, I am excited to be exposed to a different continents indoor style and competition to further my umpiring and knowledge of the game.

In your opinion, what are the strongest teams of this event?
Having not been exposed to the teams here before at an indoor tournament, I am unsure where the strength will lie. However, I would expect England and Belgium to be trying to get their information teams to the top division just like their outdoor teams, especially in an Olympic year.
Also, I am thinking that the home nation will want to perform in front of its own public.

Do you know Portugal? What do you think of the country?
I have never been in Portugal but have heard great things about the country and its people. I am hoping we will see crowds with the same passion and flare that is famous around the world in relation to the Portuguese football team
