EuroHockey Lisbon 2017 - Lee Barron Interview

As one of the EuroHockey Lisbon 2017 EHF Umpires, what do you expect of this tournament?
Having previously umpired in all the major indoor tournaments, this one is very special. At this tournament, we will get to see the next generation of players on their road to the senior national teams, some of which will no doubt figure in the outdoor version of our sport in Tokyo. I expect that all the teams will all play very fast flowing competitive hockey, but with respect for one another. Hopefully with lots of goals which makes it entertaining to watch.

Can you explain your role as an EHF Umpire for those who barely know about the structures of these big tournaments?
As a Neutral Umpire you are expected to lead by example. As a group of umpires and technical officials, we will participate in the tournament as a 9th team and my role will be to act as one of our Captains.
I will look to assist Rob, our umpire manager, in his role and also help my colleagues both on and off the pitch.

Have you ever visited Portugal or Lisbon?
Unfortunately this will be my first time in Portugal, but I have friends that recently visited Lisbon at Christmas so I’m very much looking forward to it.

What are you hoping to find?
Indoor tournaments are always quite difficult. Normally only over 3 days and due to the scheduling of games it is really difficult to relax and see any of the host cities.
That said I am hoping to go and spend some time in Rossio Square on the Thursday before we begin.
I’m sure that like all the tournaments I’ve been to, Portugal and Lisbon will be just as warm and welcoming and I look forward to my first taste of the Portuguese Hockey Federation’s hospitality.
